Can you imagine your New Year’s Eve without a glass of champagne?  Can you picture your hot, sober date finding you attractive after a few glasses of... cranberry juice?  I didn’t think so, but that’s what everyday Americans like you and me endured for over 10 years during the Prohibition era.

From 1920 to 1933, drinking, selling, transporting, and manufacturing alcohol was considered a crime in the United States.  Those who were against this so called “crime against decency”, simply found new and creative ways to smuggle in their booze.

Speakeasies or illegal underground bars were created.  Ships from abroad were anchored just off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts with barrels of alcohol to share with the thirsty American people.  During these hard times, grain alcohol was the only legal alcohol to be consumed medicinally.  Locals were able to distill and create batches of beer in their own bathtubs.
